Impostor Syndrome Disarmed: A Conversation with Empowerment Coach Dorothy Bossé

Welcome back to another edition of Energizing the Entrepreneurial Mindset, our LinkedIn Live series designed to dig deep into the real-world mindset challenges entrepreneurs face — and how to move through them with clarity and courage.

In this episode, Laura Dunkley sits down with Dorothy Bossé, Empowerment Coach and founder of Inspired by Choice, to unpack one of the most common (yet rarely talked about) blocks to growth: impostor syndrome.

If you’ve ever caught yourself asking, “Who am I to do this?”, “Do I belong in this room?”, or “What if they find out I’m not as capable as they think I am?” — this conversation is for you.

What Is Impostor Syndrome, Really?

Dorothy starts by cutting through the noise:

“Impostor syndrome is just fear — with a fancy name.”

It’s not a medical condition or a diagnosis. It’s a mindset moment. A wave of self-doubt that hits when we’re stretching, growing, and trying something new. Think of it as walking into the high school cafeteria on your first day, wondering where you belong. It’s human — and it’s manageable.

We’ve Given It Too Much Power

The term “impostor syndrome” can feel heavy — even paralyzing. Dorothy challenges us to change the narrative:

Instead of saying “I struggle with impostor syndrome,” try:

  • “I feel fear.”

  • “A part of me feels fear.”

  • “A small part of me feels fear… but the bigger part of me is ready.”

By reframing your language, you reclaim your power.

It’s Not Just for Beginners

Impostor feelings don’t go away with success. In fact, high achievers and seasoned entrepreneurs often experience it more — because they’re always pushing into new territory.

Laura shares from her own journey:

“I’ve been an entrepreneur for most of my life. But when I worked in corporate, I would walk into the boardroom and think, ‘I don’t deserve to be here.’ That voice still shows up sometimes — and I have to stop and question where it’s coming from.”

Key Insights from the Conversation

Here are some top takeaways from the episode:

  • Fear and excitement feel the same in the body. Sweaty palms, butterflies, racing heart — the only difference is the meaning we give it. Reframe it: “I’m not scared. I’m excited.”

  • Your fear has a purpose — but it doesn’t get to drive. Fear wants to keep you safe, but growth lives outside your comfort zone. Acknowledge it… then choose to move anyway.

  • Stop comparing your Day 1 to someone else’s Year 10. We often compare up — to people who’ve been doing this for years — and then tell ourselves we’re falling short. Pause. Recalibrate. Everyone starts somewhere.

  • Watch the stories you tell yourself. If someone doesn’t reply to your email, don’t assume the worst. Maybe they’re just buried in their inbox. Ask. Follow up. Don’t make fear-based assumptions.

  • You belong — just as you are. Entrepreneurs often fall into the trap of thinking they need to “earn” their spot. But your perspective, your voice, and your work matter now — not just someday.

A memorable quote for entrepreneurs

“Remember — you are observing the fear. It doesn’t control you. Ask yourself: Is this fear justified? Is your why bigger than your fear? Then take a breath, say thank you to that fear… and move forward anyway.” - Dorothy Bossé
